This Hippo Is for Real: Augustine’s Bar & Bakery

It’s a sure thing! Owner Tony Andersen, successful local gastronomic proprietor, opened Augustine’s Bar & Bakery in the Selby-Snelling neighborhood in 2017. It’s a concept cafe where you can find something wholesome and delicious to eat and something awesome to drink.

So, who is the hippo? “He’s our inspiration,” says Anne Marie, the partner-manager. " We named our restaurant after St. Augustine of Hippo, who, among other things, was the patron saint of brewers. And since we engage with the best area craft brewers, we chose the hippo as our signage.”

In addition to a deep selection of craft beers on tap and an espresso bar of quality coffee from a local roastery, Augustine’s friendly menu offers seasonal, creative, and well-balanced cuisine, including home-made pasta and fresh-baked desserts and breads, in a cozy, comfortable setting.

Breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner are served. Executive chef Scott Brink (from The Happy Gnome) expands on his talent for modern American cuisine by bringing many Mediterranean influences (St Augustine was the bishop of Hippo, an ancient town in what is now Algeria) to the seasonally changing menu.

Try Augustine’s Monday all-day happy hour; Tuesday Burger special; Wednesday kids eat free (with each additional $10 purchase); Thursday date night with a $30 prix fixe for two, and half-price bottles of wine; Flighty Fridays offer $2 off of beer flights, while Sangria Saturday has 50-cent wings and $5 sangria. Weekends are for brunch with a Build Your Own Bloody Mary Bar from 8am-2pm. In warm weather, you can feast or imbibe outdoors on the delightful patio.
